1A INTERNSHIP

WAMU/NPR, Summer 2018

This past summer I was privileged to join the team at 1A, a nationally-syndicated NPR program based in DC. Because of my extensive prior radio experience, I was able to jump right in and help with bookings, research, scripting, tape, and web buildouts. I was also selected to be part of the four-person team that produced a week of live remotes from Aspen, Colorado for the Aspen Ideas Festival. It was a whirlwind of a summer and an enormously positive experience.

COMBATING FAKE NEWS AND TERRORISM ON FACEBOOK

While 1A was visiting Aspen, CO for the 2018 Aspen Ideas Festival, I produced this pre-taped conversation between host Joshua Johnson and Monika Bickert — Facebook's head of Product Policy and Counterterrorism. The segment was broadcast during our special week of content from Aspen and has been used in later rebroadcasts.

ASK A DRAG QUEEN

This was a fun one. I helped the primary producer round out her bookings, handled some pre-interviews and sifted through research materials. We visited a children's drag event at a local library the weekend prior to the show for vox and photos, which I used to bolster the web buildout.

FAMILIES AT THE BORDER: A 1A SPECIAL

A special evening program the 1A team whipped up (with a shockingly quick turnaround), addressing the controversial family separation policy at the border. I handled the listener engagement for the special, putting together several montages of listener calls and voicemails that I had screened during our live program earlier that day.

COURTNEY BARNETT PERFORMANCE

Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett came by WAMU's studios, and we were fortunate enough to both interview her and capture some live performances. I produced both the interview and the performance video from WAMU's music studios, a first-time thing (and logistical undertaking) for 1A.

MENTAL HEALTH ONSTAGE

In the final week of my internship, I pitched and produced a full hour on mental health and Broadway — exploring how mental illness is portrayed onstage, and how it can be done safely for the actors in a high-intensity industry. Guest hosted by Celeste Headlee, my former boss at GPB's On Second Thought.
